As part of your practical test you are asked two questions dealing with the maintenance of a car. For each incorrect answer you receive a minor on test, but cannot fail for an incorrect answer.

Show me that the indicator lights are working correctly?

• Hazard lights on and walk around the car to check the lights

Show me that the Head lights are working correctly?

• Turn ignition on (not the engine) and turn the lights on, walk around the car. Check front Head lights and rear Tail lights are all on.

Show me that the Horn is working correctly?

• Press the Horn

Show me that the Brake lights are working correctly?

• Turn the ignition on and press the brake pedal

Tell me how you would use the screen wash?

• Turn the ignition on and press the screen wash button

Tell me how you would turn the window demister on?

• Turn the engine on and press the demister button

Tell me how we test to see if the Hand brake has excessive ware o come to the end of its working life?

• When applied the Hand brake must be less than 45^o and must secure the car

Tell me how you would test to see that the Power steering is working?

• Turn the engine on and try to move off, if you cant steer or its heavy you have a problem

Tell me how you would test to see if the Brakes are working correctly?

• Move off, press the Brake pedal. The brakes must be immediate(work straight away), responsive(press hard and stop quick), the car must not veer

The rest of the questions are to identify the Brake fluid, Screen wash resevour, Oil level and top up, Engine coolant.

These checks must be made wial the car is cold, on a flat surface and tested once a week and before a long journey.
